How To Get An ID

Getting an ID is just one of the many milestones of adulthood. You absolutely need one in order to move around in the world. Your ID is the most common way (besides your birth certificate and social security card) you’re gonna be identified in your day to day life. You’ll need this card if you don’t have a driver’s license or permit (although in some places a driver’s permit is not an acceptable form of identification), I’ll show you how to get one but this guide is going to be a little vague because laws are different depending on the state.

What Do You Need?

After looking at some different sites for ID applications it seems as though generally speaking, you’ll need the following:

You can click on the links provided to learn how to get your birth certificate and social security card/number.

Proof of residency is basically documentation that proves that you reside in the state that you’re trying to get your identification in. The list of documents needed for this can range from utility bills in your name or a school transcript from the state you’re trying to get ID. It’s best if you simply type this “ ID application (insert state here) “ into google or whatever search engine you like and click on the first link that has .gov in the website name. You want an official government website for good information, always verify information given to you especially in regards to your private information. Do not let anyone steer you wrong when it comes to your important documents.

Some states waive the proof of residency for foster youth under 21 who are still in the system. Check to see if that’s available to you if possible.

Where Will You Get An ID?

You’re going to typically get an ID from a government building. It’s usually a tax collectors office or a DMV. You should be able to look any of those places up in your state and find one that offers this service.

What Does It Cost?

There’s usually a fee applied for a ID (25-40$) but some states have waivers for people who make low income. Some states also offer free ID cards at no charge for homeless people. Please look into these options for your state. They do exist and hopefully it can be a blessing for you.
